    From Publishers Weekly
"Animal communication is nothing new or controversial," Gurney writes. "The question is not `When did we begin to be able to communicate with other species?' but `When did we stop?' " Of the many new books on interspecies communication, Gurney's is one of the most down-to-earth and thorough. Based on her HeartTalk Program through which Gurney has worked with 6,000 people seeking better communication with their "animal companions" (a term favored by animal communicators as more egalitarian than "pet") her book offers clear steps for reaching animals and will enhance readers' understanding of the creatures in their lives. Gurney also discusses how to choose an appropriate animal companion, how to prepare for his or her death (one of the most tender sections is a list of 18 ways to commemorate deceased pets) and how to ground and center oneself in preparation for communicating with an animal. Written in a smooth, cheery and encouraging tone she's partial to exclamation points and statements like "If I could do it, anyone can!" Gurney's descriptions of her own successful communication with dogs, horses and cats will convince those sympathetic to her message. Yet some of Gurney's advice may test even her most credulous readers: her exercises with animals who have died and with missing animals, for example, may raise some eyebrows. But for the most part, this book is helpful and enthralling. B&w photos. Agent, Jody Rein. (Aug. 14) Forecast: Though some will be put off by Gurney's occasionally corny sentimentality, many pet owners will welcome this book. Enthusiastic blurbs from vets (and more randomly, actress Linda Gray) should help sales.
