    Product Description
    Introduction from the Author

Located in Troy, NY, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute was founded by Stephen Van Rensselaer in 1824 “for the purpose of instructing persons, who may choose to apply themselves, in the application of science to the common purposes of life.” The first degree-granting technical school in the English-speaking world, RPI now encompasses six schools that cover most fields of study: Architecture, Engineering, Humanities and Social Sciences, Information Technology, Management and Technology, and Science. All of the courses prepare students for the growing role that computers play in today’s world. No matter what course of study you choose at RPI, you are guaranteed to leave with a thorough knowledge of computers and technology.

Outsiders often confuse RPI with Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT). However, those who know anything about elite engineering schools are immediately impressed at the mention of the name. The school’s reputation of hard work and real-world application precedes its graduates into the world of work. The school’s current slogan, “Why not change the world?” speaks to the institute’s intentions of preparing students to be innovators and leaders in their lives. RPI can prepare you for success beyond the classroom if you are willing to put in the work.

Chances are that if you are looking at this school, you have a good notion of what you want from your college education—so what is the point of this 150-page report? RPI is one of many fine colleges in the country where you can receive an excellent education, but numbers alone can’t tell you what goes on in life at those schools. You can go to any of a dozen resources to compare admission statistics and graduate offers, but there is nothing out there that can tell you what being at the school entails. Sure, you can take tours of different campuses and maybe find some current or former students who can give you a little nibble of the flavor of life there, but nothing else will give you the entire seven-course meal overview of what campus life is really like. The catch is that deciding on a college is one of the most important decisions you will ever make, and just like you wouldn’t want to order a meal knowing only the side dish and not the main course, you shouldn’t pick a college without a hearty sampling of its character.

That is why I took up writing this book. Yes, it is filled with statistics and numbers that you can find elsewhere (though not all in one place, I assure you), and no, it is not going to be able to tell you for certain that you will enjoy RPI. It will, however, give you the most comprehensive collection of information available. Choosing a college is more than choosing an education; it’s choosing a home for the next four years of your life. My goal in writing this book is to help you make the right decision on both accounts.
