Product Review
"This book covers the theoretical concepts and problems underlying screening for disease. It deals with the subject in a comprehensive manner and details all the theoretical and statistical aspects of the problem and the interpretation of the findings. It has a good account of the problems of experimental evaluation of screening procedures as well as an accurate account of ways in which nonexperimental methods can be set up to evaluate such methods. In addition to these theoretical aspects of the subject, it has an adequate account of some of the trials of disease-specific screening, such as those for cancer of the breast, and it provides a summary of some of the trials of treatment of early and moderate hypertension, elevated serum cholesterol, and breast cancer. This is a good text for those looking for some theoretical approaches to the problems of screening.--American Journal of Epidemiology
"Morrison was one of the outstanding intellectual innovators and analysts in the evaluation of screening tests. . . . Provides the reader with an understanding of disease progression and the role of screening. . . . lucid." --Gary D. Friedman, Kaiser Permanente, Cancer Causes and Control
"Through examples of varying mathematical complexity, Morrison brings the reader along with him. . . . all who are interested in screening will find something of value in this book; indeed much will be challenging. . . . should be a work readily available in all departments of epidemiology and biostatistics and should be in the libraries of all schools of medicine and of public health." --Anthony B. Miller, MB, American Journal of Preventative Medicine
"A thoughtful and logically constructed text. This is a book that cannot help but interest its medical readers. . . .an excellent text for those interested in understanding how to do and evaluate studies on the efficacy of screening procedures." --Lawrence E. Klein, MD (Johns Hopkins Univ School of Medicine), Annals of Internal Medicine
"This excellent book describes the theoretical framework of screening for chronic disease and the theory is well supported by numerous examples of the epidemiological evaluation of screening programs and trials. An essential textbook for anyone interested in the epidemiological or public health basis of screening for chronic disease.Well-presented.An excellent introductory and essential reference text for those who wish to understand the theoretical and scientific basis of screening for chronic disease and is highly recommended." --Australasian Epidemiological Association News
Product Description
Early detection, or screening, is a common strategy for controlling chronic disease, but little information has been available to help determine which screening procedures are worthwhile, and how often, or to whom, they should be applied. This book presents the epidemiological methods that can be used to answer such questions. The book focuses on the description and measurement of changes in the natural history of disease brought about by early detection and treatment. Valid methods for assessing the usefulness of screening in reducing morbidity and mortality are emphasized and both experimental and nonexperimental studies are fully described. In addition, this work discusses the use of mathematical models in setting screening policy; ways to enhance the feasibility of screening programs; and the clinical course of screen-detected disease, separating the effects of early treatment, lead time, and length bias on outcome. The second edition has been updated throughout and considerably expanded. There are three new chapters: Cancer of the Breast; Arteriosclerotic Vascular Disease; and Cancer of the Cervix. These give concrete demonstrations of the applications of screening methods to important diseases.
