From AudioFile
As a forensic pathologist, Janis Amatuzio deals with death on a daily basis. As a result, she has far more opportunity to spend time contemplating the boundary between life and death. In this accessible work, Amatuzio shares a number of the stories that took her understanding of life and death beyond the scientific. There's little that's new here, but Amatuzio's delivery is nicely personal. She is still moved by experiences that are decades old, and she recounts stories she's been told with compassion and respect. As she does, her voice is always professionally clear and balanced, and often rich with emotion. G.T.B. © AudioFile 2006, Portland, Maine-- Copyright © AudioFile, Portland, Maine

From Booklist
Amatuzio sees dead people. Indeed, as an anatomic, forensic, and clinical pathologist and coroner for several counties in Minnesota and Wisconsin, she sees them every day. They also see her and sometimes even speak to her through their families and other loved ones. In this slim yet powerful account, Amatuzio testifies, from her working experience, to the ethereal vastness that sometimes glimmers at us from the other side. Although she can't "cure" the survivors she encounters of what ails them, she can offer solace and comfort in what are often their most difficult hours. During decades of confronting death, Amatuzio has encountered many situations that are scientifically inexplicable yet confirm--for her, at least--that there is a place where departed loved ones persist, whence they can offer encouragement when the living miss them most. Covering incidents from the spiritual connection Amatuzio made with her very first terminal patient to the resurrection of her deceased secretary's peonies, these heartfelt true stories make worthy reading.
